Imagine your body as a remarkable hybrid vehicle.
Instead of relying on only one fuel source, it continually shifts between carbohydrates, fats, and—when necessary—protein.
Each fuel has strengths.
Carbohydrates provide readily available energy for many tissues, especially during higher-intensity activity.
Fat provides long-lasting energy reserves.
Protein is primarily a building material but can also contribute to energy under certain circumstances.

It can efficiently use whichever fuel is most appropriate for the situation.
