Gut health has become one of the most popular subjects in modern wellness.

Advertisements promise to reset the microbiome, repair the gut, eliminate toxins, cure bloating, strengthen immunity, improve mood, and transform health with one capsule, powder, cleanse, or specially branded food.

The real story is both more complicated and more interesting.

Your digestive system is not simply a hollow tube through which food passes. It is a coordinated biological system involving the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, nerves, hormones, blood vessels, immune tissues, muscles, and trillions of microorganisms.

Every meal becomes part of that system.

Food must be broken apart. Nutrients must be absorbed. Water must be recovered. Waste must be moved. Potentially harmful organisms must be controlled. Useful microorganisms must be tolerated. The intestinal lining must allow nutrients through while helping keep unwanted material out.

Gut health is therefore not one thing.

But daily habits can help create an environment in which the digestive system is more likely to function well.

Gut health is not built by one miracle food. It is shaped by the pattern of what repeatedly enters—and happens around—the digestive system.

What Does the Digestive System Do?
